Fire Door Inspection Checklist
Interactive fire door inspection checklist based on BS 8214 guidance. Check door leaf, frame, seals, closer, gaps, and signage.
Door Leaf
Door leaf condition
No holes, cracks, broken panels, or delamination. Surface intact.
Fire rating label or plug visible
Certification label, colour-coded plug, or other evidence of fire rating (FD30 / FD60).
Glazing (if present) is fire-rated
Any glazed panels are fire-rated glass with intumescent seals. No cracks.
Frame
Frame in good condition
No damage, warping, or separation from wall. Fixings secure.
Intumescent strips present and intact
Strips fitted to door edge or frame rebate. Not painted over, missing, or damaged.
Cold smoke seals present and intact
Smoke seals fitted (brush or blade type). Not compressed, missing, or damaged.
Self-Closing Device
Self-closing device fitted
Overhead closer, concealed closer, or other approved device present.
Door closes fully into frame from any angle
Test from fully open, 45°, and near-closed. Door must latch without manual assistance.
Door not held open (unless hold-open device)
No wedges, hooks, or improvised hold-open devices. Magnetic hold-open devices linked to fire alarm are acceptable.
Gaps and Clearance
Gaps at top and sides ≤ 4mm
Maximum 4mm gap between door edge and frame on hinge side, lock side, and top.
Gap at bottom ≤ 8mm (or ≤ 10mm over carpet)
Threshold gap should not exceed 8mm to a hard floor or 10mm to a carpeted floor.
Hardware
Hinges in good condition (3+ hinges on FD30)
All hinges secure, not loose or missing screws. FD30 doors need at least 3 hinges; FD60 may need more.
Latch engages correctly
Latch holds door in closed position. Lock mechanism operates smoothly.
Signage
"Fire door keep shut" sign displayed
Required on all fire doors that should remain closed. Sign visible and legible.
"Fire door keep locked shut" (if applicable)
Required where door is locked when premises unoccupied. Not needed if door is always unlocked during occupation.
